During our most recent bible study at the Channel of Grace Worship Center, Bishop Kenneth Harper encouraged us to dig deeper into understanding the significance of church values. So, I did just that each morning this week, digging deeper. In this writing, I will take a deep dive into the values of Christian churches and explore why they hold significant importance. Like my church home at the Channel of Grace, Christian churches are not merely physical structures or religious institutions; they are communities of believers who come together to worship, learn, and serve. Core values deeply rooted in their faith, teachings, and understanding of the Bible guide these churches.
Regardless of their specific denominations or traditions, Christian churches share common values that shape their identity and guide their practices. These values influence how they engage with their members, reach the wider community, and contribute to society. Understanding the significance of these values is essential for comprehending the impact and role of Christian churches in the lives of individuals and society.
In the following parts of my writing, I will look into the specific values central to Christian churches and examine their practical implications. Understanding Values in Christian Churches

Scripture plays a vital role in shaping these values. For example, Jesus commanded His followers to love one another as He loved them (John 13:34). This directive emphasizes the value of love as a guiding principle in Christian churches.

As followers of Christ, we are called to demonstrate wholehearted love for God and extend that love to our neighbors, treating them as we would want to be treated. The New Living Translation of the Bible beautifully captures this instruction in Mark 12:30–31, which states:
(30) And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.’ (31) The second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these.”
This emphasis on love encompasses personal relationships and highlights the importance of community and social responsibility.
Another shared core value I am passionate about is the pursuit of justice and righteousness. As Christians, we are called to stand up for the oppressed, advocate for the marginalized, and work towards creating a just and equitable society. This value is rooted in the belief that all human beings are created in the image of God and possess inherent dignity and worth (Genesis 1:27).

(37) Jesus replied, “ ‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ (38) This is the first and greatest commandment. (39) A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’
Here, we find the central principle of love towards God and fellow human beings, which is the bedrock of Christian values.

The Bible expounds on fundamental principles guiding Christian values, illustrating their importance. We encounter numerous passages throughout its pages emphasizing these principles and their life-changing power.
In 1 Corinthians 13:4–7 (NLT), the apostle Paul writes:
(4) Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud (5) or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. (6) It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. (7) Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.
This passage encapsulates the depth and breadth of love within Christian values, revealing its selfless and enduring nature.
Compassion is also central to Christian values, as demonstrated by Jesus Himself. Matthew 9:36 (NLT) states:
(36) When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them because they were confused and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.

The pursuit of justice intertwines with Christian values. Proverbs 21:3 (NLT) declares:
(3) The Lord is more pleased when we do what is right and just than when we offer him sacrifices.

Forgiveness, too, holds immense significance within Christian values. In Ephesians 4:32 (NLT), it states:
(32) Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.
This verse emphasizes the power of forgiveness, both in receiving God’s forgiveness and extending it to others, ultimately leading to reconciliation and healing.
A Model for Christian Values
The teachings of Jesus Christ serve as a model for Christian values. He taught these values and embodied them through His life and actions. His words and deeds give believers a tangible example, inspiring us to live out our faith practically.
In the Sermon on the Mount, found in Matthew 5–7, Jesus delivers teachings that shape Christian values. In Matthew 5:3–12, known as the Beatitudes, Jesus pronounces blessings upon the poor in spirit, the meek, the merciful, the peacemakers, and those who hunger and thirst for righteousness. These teachings highlight the values of humility, compassion, peacemaking, and righteousness as essential aspects of Christian living.
Furthermore, Jesus’ command in Matthew 5:16 to “let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father” underscores the call for believers to influence the world positively. As Christians, we receive encouragement to reflect on the character of Christ and demonstrate His values through our actions and interactions with others.
Jesus’ life is a powerful testimony to the significance of Christian values. His selfless love, sacrificial service, and unwavering commitment to truth and justice inspire and challenge us to embody these values daily.

I am thoroughly impressed by the rich array of backgrounds within my church community at Channel of Grace. The diversity spans education, professions, cultural backgrounds, ethnicities, and races, and it never fails to leave me in awe. Whether it is the belief in love, compassion, forgiveness, or the pursuit of justice, these shared values create a common ground that brings people closer and strengthens community bonds.

This value-driven approach to relationships and resource management helps Christians develop a sense of responsibility towards the world they inhabit and the people they share it with.

(8) No, O people, the LORD has told you what is good, and this is what he requires of you: to do what is right, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

One scripture that highlights the acknowledgment of these difficulties is found in the book of James 1:2–3 (NLT), which states:
(2) Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. (3) For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow.
This passage reminds us that challenges should be seen as opportunities for spiritual growth. We can strengthen our faith and become more resilient by facing these difficulties head-on and remaining steadfast in our commitment to Christian values.
Societal Norms and Personal Desires
Living out Christian values can often bring believers into conflict with societal norms and personal desires. The world may promote values contrary to Christ’s teachings, leading to clashes and dilemmas for Christians. It requires discernment and courage to stand firm in the face of opposition and choose the path of righteousness.
In the book of Romans 12:2 (NLT), the apostle Paul addresses this conflict:
(2) Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.
Paul encourages us to resist conforming to the patterns of the world and instead allow God to transform our minds and hearts. This transformation enables believers to discern God’s will and uphold Christian values even when they clash with societal norms or personal desires.
When Values Are Compromised
Despite our best efforts, we may be in situations where our values are compromised. We may stumble, make mistakes, or fall short of the ideals we strive to uphold. In such moments, seeking grace, forgiveness, and reconciliation is crucial.
The book of 1 John 1:9 (NLT) offers reassurance and guidance in these situations:
(9) But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.
This scripture reminds us that God is merciful and forgiving. When we recognize our shortcomings and sincerely confess our sins, God offers forgiveness and the opportunity for restoration. Seeking reconciliation with God and others is essential for maintaining the integrity of Christian values and creating a spirit of love and unity within our community of believers.
Upholding Christian values is not without its challenges and struggles. However, through acknowledging these difficulties, navigating conflicts with societal norms or personal desires, and seeking grace, forgiveness, and reconciliation, we can remain steadfast in our commitment to living out Christian church values in today’s world.
