Reflecting the Divine

What Does it Mean to Be Made in God’s Image?

Here’s a phrase that makes you stop and think about who you are: “Made in God’s image.” The answer is in the book of Genesis (Genesis 1:26–27), a powerful declaration that sets humanity apart from all other creations. But what does it mean to be made in God’s image?

Genesis 1:26–27 (KJV): 26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

For me, it’s not just about physical resemblance, although that’s a beautiful thing in itself. It’s about something deeper, something woven into the fabric of our being. Think of a mirror shining bright light — that’s like us, showing who God is. We’re meant to share His love, kindness, and creativity with the world (Colossians 3:12).

Colossians 3:12: (NLT): 12 Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.

This understanding changes everything, and as our presidential election unfolds in just a few weeks, this insight will be needed more than ever, regardless of the outcome. It elevates our perception of ourselves and others. Suddenly, every person we encounter, regardless of their background, beliefs, or circumstances, carries inherent dignity and worth because they, too, are created in the image of God (Psalm 139:14).

Psalm 139:14 (NKJV): 14 I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Marvelous are Your works,
And that my soul knows very well.

And it doesn’t stop there. This incredible gift comes with responsibility. We are called to be stewards of this planet, to fight for justice (Micah 6:8), to show mercy (Luke 6:36), and to love fiercely and unconditionally (1 John 4:7). Just like a painting shows the artist’s spirit, our lives should show the essence of our Creator.

I think about this when I see others who are less fortunate and many who are unhoused. It’s a humbling reminder that I’m interacting with someone who is fearfully and wonderfully made in God’s image. It changes how I approach them, how I see them, and how I treat them.

This concept, this truth, has the power to change our world. When we truly grasp the weight of what it means to be made in God’s image, we can’t help but challenge systems of oppression, break down walls of prejudice, and fight for the equality of all people. We become agents of reconciliation, bridge-builders in a world desperate for connection and understanding (Matthew 5:9).

Matthew 5:9 (KJV): 9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

So, the next time you look in the mirror, remember this: You are a masterpiece, a reflection of the Divine. Go out and live a life worthy of that calling!

It’s a Great Day to Be Alive!
